SALTAIRE From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Saltaire is a village in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 43 at the 2000 census. This is the year-round population, the population increases many times in the summer being that it is generally a summer beach community. The village is located on the western part of Fire Island between the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Saltaire is located at 40°38′15″N, 73°11′48″W (40.637520, -73.196566)^GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (15.15%) is water. The village encompasses the widest portion of Fire Island at approximately 1/2 mile. There are just over 400 homes in the community, including a Village Hall and Court, general market, Fire House, and a members Yacht Club.

Ferries leave from Bayshore, NY docks at different times. (Current Schedule) There is a Saltaire Terminal (Parking lot #3 last one on the left), but at off times the Saltiare Ferry will leave from the Main Ocean Beach Terminal. Train ($19 round trip): Long Island Rail Road from NY Penn Station to Bay Shore. Transfer in Jamaica to the "Speonk" train. Other times called Montauk line. You can walk to the Ferry (1/2 mile) or take a 5 minute shuttle $4 a person (Suggested for first timers). Shuttle makes multiple stops so make sure you get off at Saltaire Ferry. Runs frequently no need to call ahead. Leaves from Saltaire Terminal (Last Ferry on the Left). Many ferries leaves from this area. Make sure you are at the right one. Bathroom is an outhouse in the parking lot.
